The Kiwanis Club of Pike Road is selling historic Christmas ornaments featuring Pinkstonβs Grocery to raise money for college scholarships for Pike Road students.
The Kiwanis Club began its historic Christmas ornament series in 2020 using the drawings of local artist Bruce Brannen. βEach year, we choose historical places that represent the true community sense of Pike Road,β club President Steve Straughn said.
This yearβs ornament features Brannenβs drawing of Pinkstonβs Grocery, a country store and gas station that stood at the intersection on Vaughn Road where the CVS now sits.
Barnett Pinkston ran the store from 1945 until his death in 1990. His store was a community hangout where gossip was shared and purchases were recorded on index cards until customers were ready to settle up, according to family members.
Straughn said the ornaments are $15, and all proceeds go toward the clubβs scholarship program for Pike Road seniors. The club has presented $27,500 in scholarships to worthy seniors in the last four years.
The ornaments are available from Kiwanis Club members or using the Contact Us link below. A few historic ornaments from previous years are available for $10 each. They feature the John Hall Store, the Marks House, Kirksey Grocery and Grace Episcopal Church.
